Why This Keeps Sliding

It Doesn't Feel Urgent Until the Runway's Gone

One skipped workout doesn't undo your fitness, the same way one good workout doesn't build it. That's true, and it's also the exact belief that lets weeks slide into months. Ordinary fitness has no deadline, so putting it off costs you nothing today. Trip prep is different. It has a hard stop on a specific date, whenever your flight leaves, and the compounding works the same way whether you're building toward that date or ignoring it. Only one of those has a hard stop attached to it.

Discomfort Is Data Your Brain Listens To

Training is uncomfortable on purpose. Your heart rate climbs. Muscles you haven't used complain the next day. It costs you energy you might have wanted for something else. None of that is evidence of anything wrong with you. Avoiding discomfort is a completely reasonable response, and it's kept humans alive for a long time. The trouble is that this instinct doesn't distinguish between “avoid this, it's dangerous” and “avoid this, it's inconvenient.” It treats both the same way.
