Consistency breaks down for women 40+ in their health habits, not because you lack discipline or motivation, but because information alone cannot survive stress, hormonal shifts, and cognitive overload without the specific skills, systems, and support designed for a high-stakes, “loud” life. TL;DR: The Knowing–Doing Gap The Midlife Consistency Trap: When “Knowing” Isn’t Enough You are a capable, well-educated woman. You’ve navigated career pivots, managed complex family dynamics, and likely have a “black belt” in problem-solving. When it comes to your health, you aren’t lacking information. You know that movement matters, sleep is foundational, and vegetables are a “good idea.” Yet, when life gets loud—when a work deadline collides with a teenager’s crisis or a night of perimenopausal insomnia—the gap between what you know and what you do feels like a canyon. You might tell yourself that you’ve “failed” again. You might quietly wonder why everyone else seems to have Read More . . .
Total Health in Midlife Episode #251: Cravings, Stress, Belly Fat: Why Willpower Isn’t Your Problem
You start every January with a new plan: stricter rules, cleaner eating, earlier workouts. By March, the plan has quietly vanished, and you’re left blaming yourself… again. In this episode, we pull back the curtain on why your 2025 diet really failed—and why it has a lot less to do with willpower and a lot more to do with being a midlife woman with an actual life, actual hormones, and actual responsibilities. We unpack the hidden reasons your “perfect” plan fell apart: night snacking on the couch, saying yes to food you don’t want so you don’t offend anyone, mistaking exhaustion for hunger, and using “I deserve this” food as your only form of self-care. Instead of shaming you for not sticking to the plan, we treat those moments as data that show you what’s really going on with your body, brain, and environment. You’ll learn why traditional diets aren’t Read More . . .
Goal Setting Series Episode #2: Myths of Achieving Goals
If you’ve ever set a goal with the best intentions, only to watch it fall apart a few weeks later, this episode will feel like someone finally turned the lights on. Today, we’re digging into the hidden myths that quietly sabotage midlife women — myths that make you think you’re the problem when, in reality, your model was flawed from the start. In Part 2 of the Goal Setting Series, Elizabeth breaks down why health and habit goals collapse even when you’re committed, smart, disciplined, and doing “all the right things.” These myths show up as believable reasons, familiar patterns, and well-worn stories about motivation, consistency, timing, and willpower — and they are the reason women in midlife struggle to make health changes stick. The episode doesn’t shame you for these patterns — it explains them. More importantly, it shows you why the strategies you’ve been told to use were Read More . . .
Goal Setting Series Episode #1: Setting Realistic Goals
Most midlife women don’t struggle with goals because they’re undisciplined. They struggle because they’ve been taught to set goals as if they’re living in their past life—the one with more energy, fewer responsibilities, and a calmer hormonal landscape. In this episode of Total Health in Midlife, we’re kicking off a powerful four-day Goal Setting Series designed to help you set goals that finally stick. Today’s episode explores why the traditional goal-setting methods you’ve relied on for years never accounted for your invisible workload, emotional labor, shifting hormones, or the reality of being “the responsible one” in everyone’s life. We pull apart the myth of the “realistic” goal and uncover the structural mismatch that causes your habits to fall apart the moment life gets loud. If you’ve ever thought, “I should be able to do this,” only to watch your goals crumble during busy seasons, this episode will give you relief, Read More . . .

The Power of ‘Half-Assing’ Your Health: Why Perfection Isn’t Necessary for Progress
This article was written for and originally published on Sixty and Me Here Ever feel like you need to overhaul your entire life to get healthy? Have you ever found yourself putting off making changes because you can’t do it all perfectly? If this resonates, you’re not alone and many women just like you feel overwhelmed by health advice that seems to demand perfection. But what if I told you that you don’t need to be perfect to make real progress? In fact, embracing a ‘half-assed’ approach to your health might be the key to lasting change. Half-assing your health isn’t about lowering your standards. It’s about making consistent, manageable improvements that add up over time. Half-assing your health is about making progress, not striving for perfection. And it’s an approach that can lead to better health, more energy, and yes, even weight loss if that’s your goal. In this Read More . . .

Done with Dieting Episode #22: The Power of Visualization in Weight Loss
Do you use the power of visualization when it comes to achieving your goals? If you’re not, you’re missing out. I’ve talked about visualization on the podcast before, in a few techniques that I use within my coaching practice, but on episode 22 of the Done with DIeting Podcast, we’re talking about the power that visualization has to create your results: Visualizing what’s going to happen BEFORE it even happens. See, we often use our past experiences to determine if we’re capable of doing something in the future. (Example: I’ve made rice before, so I’m relatively confident that I can make risotto.) Because weight loss will often take several attempts before we are successful. We often use those past attempts as evidence that weight loss isn’t meant for us. When your confidence and belief that you can be successful in your goal are low, having a vision can help you Read More . . .
Why goals might not get you to your goal
There are no shortage of memes about goals. “A goal without a plan is just a wish” “Set your goals high, and don’t stop until you get there” “Goals that are not written down are just wishes” Aaaah! They’re endless! Not only were goals a huge part of my early success with my weight, but they were a cornerstone of my health coaching business for a long time. I would teach folks about SMART Goals. How to create them, and help them through the process. But I’ve changed my attitude about goals. I don’t think they’re necessary anymore. I have a client who’s daughter is one of the most disciplined kids that I know. Every year, she’d create New Years Resolutions, and actually complete them! I Know! Who does that?!? I think they were tests of her willpower. When she was in high-school, she created a New Years Resolution to perform Read More . . .
What do you say to yourself?
Have I mentioned lately how much I love my bodybugg? I also have the display device which, when I originally got it, didn't think it was that useful. After all, I uploaded my information on a pretty consistent basis – twice or three times a day. Since it doesn't take that long to upload the data from the armband, it was really easy for me to keep track of the number of calories I was burning. Well, once I got the digital display, I realized that I didn't need to update as often as I had been doing, because the digital display allows me to see almost real time how many calories I'm burning. Yes, Exactly! It allows me to be even more anal retentive than I had been before! So anyway, I recently set a goal to burn 100 calories per hour, or 2400 calories per day. I burn Read More . . .
Goal Setting Series Episode #4: Maintaining Motivation
If you’ve ever felt like your motivation evaporates the moment life gets stressful, this episode will feel like someone finally turned the lights on. In this final part of the Goal Setting Series, we dig into why midlife women struggle to stay consistent with their health habits — and why it has nothing to do with discipline, willpower, or “trying harder.” Instead, I’ll show you why your system is failing you, not the other way around. You’ll learn how midlife emotional load, hormonal shifts, caregiving, work pressure, and daily unpredictability make traditional goal-setting strategies completely unrealistic — and what to do instead. This episode also breaks down the three forces that actually create consistency: identity, commitment, and focus. You’ll hear real stories of women who transformed their habits using micro-wins and simple systems that fit into real life — not fantasy life. If you’re tired of restarting, tired of feeling Read More . . .

In this episode of Total Health in Midlife, we uncover the hidden forces that derail your habits long before you ever “fall off track.” This conversation is about the obstacles you don’t see coming—the emotional labor, invisible responsibilities, and overloaded schedule that make traditional goal-setting impossible. You’ll learn why your habits collapse the moment life gets chaotic, why this pattern is predictable, and how to finally build goals that can survive the real rhythm of your days. If you’ve ever wondered, “Why can’t I stay consistent?” or “Why do my goals fall apart the minute I’m busy?”, this episode will show you what’s actually happening beneath the surface. And more importantly, it will show you how Read More . . .

What happens when you’re so good at keeping everything together… that you forget to take care of yourself? In this episode of The Total Health in Midlife Podcast, I’m joined by Master Certified Coach and people-pleasing expert Sara Fisk to explore a surprising culprit behind so many women’s exhaustion, resentment, and stalled health goals: high-functioning codependency. We’re not talking about the kind of codependency tied to addiction. This is the polished, over-performing version that shows up in moms, partners, daughters, and leaders—the women who hold everything and everyone together… and quietly fall apart in the process. Sara shares how people-pleasing, perfectionism, and control patterns drain your energy, chip away at your physical and emotional health, and keep you stuck in a cycle of doing for others while ignoring your own needs. If you’ve ever found yourself running ragged fixing other people’s problems, this episode will help you come back to Read More . . .
